Top level talks, involving a group of 20 Balearic businesspeople, were held yesterday at the Chamber of Commerce headquarters in Palma, to discuss raising money in the event of Palma airport being privatised. Chamber of Commerce sources said yesterday that leading businesspeople from the commercial sector, hotels, travel agents and financial institutions attended the meeting, which had been called to draw up plans to raise the necessary capital to take over management of Palma's Son Sant Joan airport, one of the busiest charter airports in Europe, and ensure that it remains in Balearic hands. It appears that the group wants to be ready as soon as possible to make its bid if the opportunity arises. The group also intends to lobby the government in Madrid for the decentralisation of the airport and to ask that the ownership of the installations at the terminal remain in the hands of the state with leases and concessions being offered.
