The head of the Costa del Sol tourist board, Ana Gomez, said yesterday that the resorts are experiencing a “spectacular” increase in the number of German tourists from traditional destinations such as Majorca and the Canaries “because of the extortionate prices, saturation and low quality.” Gomez said that German tourists are important for the Costa del Sol, not only because of their spending power but also because they are helping the region decentralise its tourist industry and boost off-season tourism, “which is when we are at our weakest.” According to Gomez, many of the new German tourists they are getting would have usually holidayed in Majorca and are spending an average of 6.000 peseta per day, with golfers spending as much as between 40'000 and 60.000 pesetas. It is the golf market where Majorca has been warned to smarten up its act, reduce green fees and improve quality in order to compete with the more famous and competitive golf courses on mainland Spain.
