The Chairman of the Association of Spanish Airlines, Felipe Navio, said in Palma yesterday that he is firmly opposed to the management of Spanish airports being handed over to the autonomous government, but he did back moves to privatise airports and stressed the vital need for Spanish airlines to be involved in the future management plans. Over the next few days the Association will decide upon its official position on the future of Spanish airports and whether or not airlines are interested in participating in the “lobby” by Balearic business leaders to raise capital ahead of airports being privatised, in order to make a bid for control of Palma airport. But Navio does not agree with the capital and business “know-how” coming solely from the Balearics and said yesterday that any such bid should be open to participation from companies overseas.
