A total of 12 people have been killed on Palma's roads this year, one more than during the first six months of last year, according to the deputy mayor of Palma, José Manuel Sierra. The city has also witnessed an 11 percent increase in the number of traffic accidents this year and a spokesperson for the Local Police, says that the mean reason for 2'100 accidents having occurred in the capital is because of the ever increasing number of cars. According to police figures, this year there are 875 vehicles per 1'000 Palma inhabitants. But dangerous driving habits are also being blamed. Sierra said that the main causes of accidents is the use of mobile telephones while driving or playing loud music in a vehicle, both of which are extremely distracting for a driver. The deputy mayor stressed the need for people to obey the traffic laws and regulations.
