IN an attempt to try and ease the tension between residents and bar owners in the popular night time area of La Lonja in Palma, the city council announced yesterday that it is to introduce a new set of restrictions controlling music in the area. Palma City Health Councillor, Maria Crespo, revealed yesterday that in accordance with the new noise regulations, from Sundays to Thursdays, bars cannot play music between 1am and 9am while on Fridays and Saturdays, no music is permitted between 2am and 9am and all the bars have to be closed by 4am. The new regulations will come into full force next week and will apply to the 60 businesses in the area which has been declared an acoustically contaminated zone. The move by the city council comes after a recent set of tests revealed that noise levels in the streets and in houses in the area were above the levels permitted. What is more, irrelevant of whatever licence bars may have, all bars in the area will have to be closed by 4am and cannot re-open until 9am.
