MAJORCA started the Queen Mother's 100th birthday celebrations last night with a dinner organised by the Royal British Legion at la Vileta restaurant. Over 50 guests attended the party including the British Consul Alan Smith and his wife and former Balearic PP Europarliamentarian and the vice-president of the Balearic Parliament Francisca Bennàssar and her husband. A host of members from the British community from across the island gathered for the centenary celebrations which got underway in the United Kingdom earlier this month. With the Union Jack flying and live music playing gently in the background a wonderful dinner was enjoyed with the British Consul proposing the toast to the Queen Mother. A number of parties are being held by the British community in the build up to the Queen Mother's official birthday and on Sunday July 30th Cannon Jim Hawthorne will be holding a special service at the Anglican Church. The Royal British Legion has only recently been established on the island, but already has a number of members and is playing an important role in helping ex-service men and women living in the Balearics.
