The Majorcan Tourist Board held its annual gala dinner and awards ceremony on Thursday night with its top award, the Gold medal being awarded to Sebastián Barceló “in recognition of a life dedicated to the construction of hotel complexes, at first in the Balearics and then developing that idea into resorts across Spain and Latin America where the hotel-resort complex has become the foundation for the development of the continent's tourist industry.” The Gold Medal was also awarded to Montserrat Ferrer for “global promotion” of the island via the company Perlas Majorica. A posthumous award went to Rodolfo Bay Wright who founded the airline Spantax “in recognition of the person who most represented the Spanish pioneers in the airline industry.” Silver medals went to Eduardo Baronet, who represents French and Belgian airlines in Majorca and the hotelier Jaime Cortes. Gold plaques were also awarded to the Grupo Serra's German weekly newspaper Mallorca Magazin and the German tour operator Alltours Flugreisen. A silver plaque was presented to the online tour operator Juniper Net with a Tourist Board diploma being awarded to British travel writer Tony Kelly.
