Thanks to Jaume Matas, the Spanish Minister for environment and former chief minister of the Balearics, Puerto Andraitx will boast a special area dedicated to environment, which is one of the key words used by politicians these days. The area of the Port between the bridge crossing the S'Aluet stream and the Club de Vela on the landside of the road, known as Es Prat, has been abandoned for several years, since the land and small farmhouse were sold with a view to development. People stopped seeing Gabriel herding his cows along the road into the stalls. He used to be one of the classic scenes of the Port that have disappeared into the memory of only the older residents and visitors. Those with even longer memories may remember that in the Sixties there used to be a nightclub known as Es Prat, but it did not last very long. The changes in the classification of the land made the development an impossibility, but unfortunately the so called preservation resulted in the area becoming extremely abandoned, the house gradually falling down and people slipping in amongst the bushes to use them for certain necessities due to the lack of public toilets in the village.
