The local Ministry for Health claimed yesterday that all meat on sale in the Balearics is safe to eat. But this latest safety pronouncement will fall on deaf ears, with beef sales continuing to drop and the public shying away from meat because of the recent scares. Balearic minister Josep Pomar said that he had received the necessary assurances that all beef from the Balearics and the mainland on sale locally was BSE free. His vain attempt to convince the public comes as many hundreds of farmers across Spain face bankruptcy. Compensation from the government will be forthcoming but the cost for the consumer will be high.
