Palma City Council want to stamp out unauthorised drinking in public places, in particular along the stretch of road and parking to the commercial dock yard in front of the Cathedral which over the past few years has become a popular outdoor drinking pound for hundreds of teenagers and young people every weekend. It is such people which La Lonja bar owners claim are making all the noise in the area and annoying residents. They apparently drink out of the back of cars with their friends along the quay, leaving a mess of bottles in their wake, and then head into La Lonja for a single drink - neither profitable for bar owners nor peaceful for residents. But yesterday Councillor for Health, Maria Crespo, said it is going to end.
