More than 1'850 dancers, musicians, and singers from 35 countries will be in Majorca next week for the ninth World Folkdance Festival which opens on April 17. It is considered the most important event of its kind in the world and has the full backing of the Palma city council, the Balearic ministry of tourism and Ibatur, the Balearic Institute of Tourism. It is held in Palma every two years and this year has a budget of 21 million pesetas. Groups taking part will be coming from as far afield as Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Nigeria, Jamaica, Malaysia and Togo, among other countires. Deputy Mayor Joan Bauzà described it as a show which was “unique in the world.”
