The Spanish government's proposed introduction of a new fuel tax has not been welcomed in the Balearics. The region's Minister for Finance, Joan Mesquida, said that after years of fighting for greater fuel tax relief in the Balearics, the islands will be the first to suffer should a new tax be put on fuel. Fuel is one of the Balearics' key elements because the islands are so dependent on transport and the Balearic government fears that a new tax will prove extremely negative for the region and will knock-on effects on the local commercial, industrial and transport sectors; especially coming at a time when most businesses are trying to ride the economic down turn.
