Shopkeepers were rejoicing but shoppers felt differently as the Balearic government agreed to continue with the freeze on all new big stores. The move was approved by the local parliament yesterday and it effectively means that Majorca can forget about anymore hyper-markets and large department stores. The freeze is intended to help small shopkeepers. Deputy leader of the Balearic government Pere Sampol said yesterday “this is an early Christmas present for all those involved in the industry.” But shoppers wanting more choice will find that they will still have to travel to the mainland if they want a large variety of stores and designer labels.
