A three-year-old Dutch girl tragically died yesterday when a change machine fell on top of her in an amusement arcade in the Porto Pi shopping centre. The little girl was with her parents and brother at the time of the accident at 1.30pm. According to the emergency services, the girl, on holiday, was killed by the sheer weight of the machine. Both parents suffered from severe shock and needed hospital treatment. The National Police homicide squad is in charge of the investigation and ordered the immediate closure of the arcade, which was apparently very busy at the time of the accident. The company which owns the arcade yesterday expressed its sincere condolences to the family and its lawyer has offered the police maximum co-operation in order to establish the cause of the accident. The large arcade is next to one of the commercial centre's main entrances and is extremely popular with the public and many in the vicinity at the time were left stunned by the incident. Police sources said that for the moment, the investigation will centre on why the machine toppled over on to the child. Investigators are keen to establish if the machine was firmly fastened to the floor or not.
