On Friday, to mark World No Smoking Day, the Balearic government announced that it is going to launch a crack down on smoking in the Balearics. The primary target are smokers and those accustomed to being able to light-up any where may be in for a shock. The authorities are planning tough measures. The measures would prohibit smoking in public places such as schools, hospitals or buses and strictly limit it in offices, restaurants and hotels, making it difficult to smoke practically anywhere except at home. Central government is also including a ban on the advertising of cigarettes, their sale separately or to people aged under 18 years, and gradually abolish cigarette vending machines. Smoking was the determining factor in the deaths of more than 55'000 Spaniards last year. The plan was scheduled to be presented to Spain's 17 autonomous regions in July.
