The Balearic Minister for Innovation, Príam Villalonga, said yesterday that the government wants to transform the population into digital citizens with everybody connected to the internet. Villalonga and the Secretary of State for Telecommunications met in Palm yesterday to finalise way of increasing the use of information technology in the Balearics. Four specific projects are to be launched, Internet in schools, Internet in libraries, Internet for everybody and Digital citizens. Each of the projects will last about two years and the Secretary of State praised the Balearics for its active approach to promoting the use of IT in society and ensuring that the facilities are available for anybody who wishes to learn how to use the new telecommunications systems. The Internet in schools project was actually launched by Prime Minister Aznar last April and central government will be investing 270 million euros in the national project over the next three years. The aim in the Balearics is to have an internet terminal per every 15 students in each of the region's schools and colleges with the Balearic government covering 60 per cent of the 5.2 million euro project.
