The Guardia Civil have this year inspected 1.613 jet bikes in the Balearics and 440 people have been penalised - the majority for either failing to have the bike's papers in order or for irregularities with the owners' skipper licence. This summer the Guardia Civil have mounted a special campaign to tighten controls on jet bikes, recreational yachts and marinas in order to reduce the number of accidents. This year new regulations were introduced governing the use of jet skis and only with the permission from an adult can a 16-year-old drive a jet ski, otherwise drivers have to be over 18. Jet ski owners are also obliged to take out insurance.
