The Balearics has some of the highest petrol prices in the country. This state of affairs has been made even worse by the introduction of a new tax on fuel introduced in all provinces. Madrid has the highest fuel prices followed by the Balearics. A litre of normal grade fuel in the Balearics before tax costs 82.7 cents compared to 81.1 cents in Cantabria. The three major fuel companies say that petrol is more expensive here because of transport costs. However, the Balearic government has said that they would like to set-up their own fuel distribution system to compete directly with the big three. Presently the Spanish government sets the maximum price for petrol in the country. The main oil companies adjust their prices accordingly. However, so far they have not broken ranks and all three offer the same petrol prices.
