Union bosses yesterday accused local hoteliers of trying to fan the flames and that the decision for a number of hotels to close this winter is “political.” Secretary General of the Balearic CC.OO union's Commerce, Hostelry and Tourism Federation, Rafael Borrás, said that there are few economic reasons why so many hotels should be closing for the winter, claiming that hoteliers are merely making a statement against the Balearic government. What the union is worried about now is that, while in July and August, near record numbers were employed in the hotel sector, around 95'000 people, the winter shut down is going to push unemployment figures way past the winter norm, which he claims can be avoided.
