The first major accident training exercise was carried out in the Soller tunnel yesterday. The tunnel was closed for over an hour while Insular Council of Majorca and Palma Council fire fighters responded to a fire deep in the heart of the tunnel. The exercise not only provided fire and emergency services a chance to test their emergency procedures in case of a major disaster inside the tunnel, but also enabled experts to check ventilation systems, evacuation routes and examine the tunnel's security systems. Chiefs from both fire departments over saw proceedings along with tunnel manager. Although the tunnel was opened a few years ago, this was the first time the fire services have carried out a simulated accident exercise inside the tunnel.
