A brisk start to the year in the Balearics and the first flakes of snow fell yesterday on the Puig Mayor at around 1'000 metres, and at times, threatened to fall in Palma as outbreaks of sleet marked the morning as temperatures dropped sharply. The Balearics was on weather alert over night as north easterly winds gusted at between 90 and 110 kilometres per hour and little improvement is expected today with the emergency services remaining on stand by. Torrential rain yesterday saw as much as 40 litres per square metre of rain fall in some parts of Majorca, such as Lluc, although, fingers crossed - the Balearics will escape the severe winter weather which is bringing parts of the mainland to a halt.
