THE Balearic debt stood at 466 million euros in the last quarter of last year, 25.6 per cent more than the same period in 2001, according to figures from the Bank of Spain. The total debt of all the regions of Spain came to 41'527 million euros, 1.9 per cent more than the same period in 2001. It represented six per cent of the gross domestic product. The region with the biggest debt was Catalonia with 9'587 million euros, followed by Andalucia with 7'081 million euros.
The Balearics had the third lowest debt after Cantabria (272 million euros) and La Rioja (148 million euros) but the second highest percentage increase. The debt dropped in seven regions, including Catalonia and the Basque Country.
