THREE members of the same English family were killed in a traffic accident in Minorca yesterday.
The mother and young son apparently died at the scene, the husband and father died later while being rushed to hospital, The fourth member of the family, another young son, was in casualty last night. According to the Guardia Civil and 061 emergency centre in Minorca, the accident happened early yesterday afternoon just outside Sa Penya de S´Indio in the municipality of Es Mercadal. Police said that the family of four, on holiday in Minorca, were travelling in a hire car when they were involved in a collision with a refrigerated lorry. The exact cause of the accident was unclear yesterday evening but crash investigators said that the most likely cause was the wet road.
Apparently, the driver of the car in which the British family were travelling lost control of the vehicle, according to the Guardia Civil, veered across the central reservation and collided with the milk tanker. Two ambulances carrying teams of paramedics rushed to the scene, but according to emergency centre sources, there was little that could be done to save the mother and young child. The father and young brother were rushed to Verge del Toro hospital in Mahon, but the father was in a critical condition and passed away before reaching casualty. The lone survivor of the tragic accident was said to have been in a stable condition, having escaped with relatively minor injuries compared to the three other victims. Hospital sources said that he was also being monitored by a team of psychologists who will also be offering him treatment to help the young boy come to terms with losing his family.
