By Humphrey Carter CALVIA council will today deploy five members of the Local Police force to attend the needs of holidaymakers. The idea of the new security scheme is to improve the level of attention given to tourists while also improving the region's image. Each of the five Local Police officers will have their own beats attached to the tourist information offices in Palmanova, Magalluf, Peguera, Santa Ponsa and Cas Catala-Illetas. The tourist police operation will run until the middle of November when the results of the scheme will be assessed and the next phase discussed. The five police officers will have the necessary powers in order to urgently respond to any official complaints made by holidaymakers at the participating tourist information offices. The complaints will be assessed and studied on a daily basis and the relevant action taken as quickly as possible. Should any of the complaints be the responsibility of other Calvia council departments, then they will be lodged with the relevant council officers. The police will monitor their progress to make sure that the problems are rapidly resolved. Whatever the complaints are about, the state of the beaches, rubbish, the sea front or noise, Calvia council wants holidaymakers to make use of the new service which has been set up to deal with Calvia's problems and help improve the municipality by using the feedback from tourists. Come the start of next year's holiday season, there will be special tourist police on the streets across the Balearics. Over the winter at least 500 officers are destined for the Balearics, 100 have been confirmed for Majorca and 400 for Ibiza. They are learning English and law enforcement in busy holiday resorts. The government will next year spend over six million euros on the tourist police force, with all officers able to speak Spanish, Catalan and English while some will have a working knowledge of German. The first 100 will be deployed in the Balearics on May 1. The annual tourist police operation will involve a nine-month deployment to the various resorts in Spain and they will also be required to help cover for Local Police on holiday.
