By Humphrey Carter GERMAN supermodel Claudia Schiffer is spending 60'000 euros on the restoration of the 16th century tower which lies on her estate in Camp de Mar. The project has already started and will be completed within the next two months, when a gala unveiling attended by Schiffer is expected to be held and the monument re-opened to the public. The ancient watch tower is a popular spot for walkers and sightseers. In the summer it attracts an average of 100 people per day, but over the years the tower has crumbled into a sorry ruin and Schiffer has stepped in to save the monument and return it, not only to its former glory, but also to the people of Andratx. A leading expert in historic restorations, architect Juan Gonzalez who visited the tower yesterday, has designed the project which is being carried out by constructors Baltyc. The monument is also of great architectural value and both the interior and exterior of the tower are being restored with a special set of wooden staircases also being built for visitors. Yesterday Andratx council expressed its deep gratitude to the Schiffer family, which has had a relationship with Majorca spanning the past two decades, for funding the restoration project. The finishing touches are currently being given to the three million pound property development Claudia Schiffer is currently building on her Camp de Mar hillside estate.
