Staff Reporter THE Balearics, and Madrid had the dearest lead free and super petrol in Spain in September. Diesel was at its most expensive in Madrid. The central ministry of the economy confirmed yesterday that the average national price for unleaded petrol in September was 82.6 euro cents, compared to 89.5 cents for super and 68.3 for diesel. Prices are higher in Madrid because it is the only region where there is currently a fuel surcharge to finance health programmes. Diesel was more expensive, not only in Madrid, but also in the Balearics, Cantabria, Valencia and Extremadura, where it was priced at 68.3 cents in all these regions. However, in contrast to fuel price rises in other areas of the European Union, costs for the commodity actually fell on the Peninsula and in the Balearic Islands in September, between 0.14 and 0.37 cents per litre. The ministry said prices in Spain, governed by the crude oil market, continue to be the cheapest in the EU.
