Staff Reporter AN 82-year-old man, identified only as J.N.M., and an 81-year-old woman with initials M.S.G., died in the early hours of yesterday morning in their home in calle Doctor Crespí, in the town of Santa Margalida. According to Guardia Civil sources, the couple were vicitims of a fire caused by a heater underneath a living room table. A neighbour alerted police and firemen. Once inside, local police and Guardia Civil officers found the woman's body but had to wait until firemen had extinguished the flames before finding the second body in bed. Police believe the dead man couldn't get out of bed due to a handicap leaving him unable to walk. Emergency services also confirmed that a 33-year-old Moroccan resident, Said M., suffered serious burns to his face, hands and neck as a result of the outbreak of fire on the first floor of a semi-derelict building in calle Socorro, Palma. The fire began late on Tuesday night, completely destroying the contents of one room, as well as seriously damaging timber beaming. Smoke penetrated the rest of the 3-storey building causing injury to 2 tenants. Finally, about 4.50pm today, Palma firemen had to evacuate six residents from a block of flats situated in calle Tomás Rullán in Son Gotleu due to the breakout of fire on the third floor. No injuries were reported but the cause of the blaze remains unknown. The occupants managed to get out of the 6-storey building quickly but firemen had to help several residents from higher floors out of the building.
