PALMA city council is trying to re-negotiate its loans and mortgages funding its city centre car park schemes and is considering a variety of new parking payment methods.

From 2005, it looks certain that clients will pay “real time,” by minute as opposed to by 30 minute or 15 minute blocks.
Alvaro Gijon, Palma councillor for transport and traffic, said yesterday that the only stumbling block at the moment is that the ticket machines only accept certain coins. However, he said that the council has approved a motion to look for new charging and payment methods which prove attractive to all five of the concessions running car parks in Palma.

The city councillor yesterday unveiled a new swipe card which is to be accepted by the Municipal Palma Parking Company (SMAP) car parks.
The card offers drivers the benefit of pre-paying for their parking in blocks of 35, 50 and 100 euros.
The cards will be valid at the Santa Pagesa, Parc de la Mar, Comte d´Empúries and Vía Roma car parks. “Palmaparking” card users will also be entitled to a ten percent discount and will be charged in blocks of 15 minutes after the first hour.
The new Palmaparking cards will be valid from June 1 and available from SMAP offices.
250 car parking spaces have also been put up for sale, with savings of around 80 percent, to businesses at the new Santa Pagesa.
Businesses will be able to rent a car parking space between the hours of 7am and 10pm for 60 euros a month.
