Staff Reporter The number of people out of work registered at unemployment offices throughout the Balearics, had fallen at the end of April this year by 5'188, in comparison with the previous month.

The current total for unemployed in the Islands therefore stands at 28'885, a figure equivalent to 6.81 percent of the working population.
According to data held by the Ministry of Employment, and in relative terms, the fall in the number of those collecting unemployment benefit in the Balearics in April was 15.23 percent in respect of March, the highest of all Spain's regions. The figure indicating fall in unemployment for the country as a whole was only 2.2 percent.

In relation to April 2003, however, the number of those now claiming unemployment benefit in the Balearics is up by 1'242 (4.49 percent).
In the three years prior to 2004, unemployment claimants documented in the month of April varied in the following proportions: in 2001, numbers fell by 21.63 percent; in 2002, 13.85 percent; and in 2003 by 19.32 percent.

At the end of last month, unemployment amongst the male population in the Islands stood at 13'091 and fell in comparison to the previous month by 1'978 (-13.13 percent), while the unemployed female population registered 15'794, showing numbers had fallen by 3'210 (-16.89 percent) in relation to March.

In comparison with April 2003, male unemployment rose by 998 and female by 244.
Analysed according to sectors, unemployment was recorded at the following levels: numbers out of work during April this year in Agriculture fell by 18 (-8.78%); in Industry they fell by 199 (-10.15%); in Construction numbers were reduced by 101 (-2.51%); in the Services sector by 4'913 (-18.41%); and in the group which has never had any previous employment, they rose by 43 (3.58%).

Amongst young people under 25 years of age, unemployment fell in April this year by 1'271 (-18.88 percent); numbers of men out of work fell by 492 and women by 779.

In comparison with April 2003, unemployment figures for men less than 25-years-old had risen by 88, but numbers of women in the same age group out of work fell by 318.

The numbers of contracts secured for jobs rose this April to stand at 36'516, a noticeable 4'778 more than in the previous month of March.
