Staff Reporter THE grandmother of the baby girl found in the toilets of the Club Nautico in Palma has arrived on the island to claim custody. The baby, found in the early hours of Saturday morning with the umbilical cord still attached, is in hospital, where she is reported to be in good health, although tests are still being carried out to confirm this.

Her mother, Jessica Maria B., aged 26, of Germany, is in police custody, charged with abandoning the baby.
Sources said that initially she denied the baby was hers, but a medical examination showed that she had recently given birth.
According to sources, the grandmother has been in touch with the German consulate, to take the first steps towards obtaining custody.
However, the minors court of Palma has issued an order that the baby must stay in Son Dureta until the Council of Majorca's minors department decides who should have custody.

Doctors have named the baby Maria del Mar.

INVESTIGATION
The minors department will open an investigation into the baby's immediate family to determine if custody should be awarded to the grandmother or another member of the family.

It is not known how long this will take as the local department will have to contact the social services department in Germany. According to police sources, the baby's alleged mother appeared before the court before being transferred to jail.

The same sources said that she had arrived in Palma on Friday by air and joined a group of friends who had chartered a boat at the Club Nautico.
She allegedly went out for a drink with two girl friends on Friday night, but felt unwell and returned to the yacht club, where she gave birth alone in the toilets.

It is alleged that the birth was rapid and although the woman lost a great deal of blood she did not cry out or seek aid.
Although she left the baby in the toilet, she herself alerted the Guardia Civil, claiming she had found her.
However, the Guardia Civil claim that her sole purpose in coming to Majorca was to have the baby and abandon her.
The woman's friends said they had not realised she was pregnant. es
