PERE Cañellas was yesterday elected for a third term as president of the Majorcan Hotel Federation and said that, when he returns to his post on Friday, “we've a new, a fresh challenge ahead of us and I intend to be president for all the hoteliers.” He admitted that it is a “moment of change” in the hotel industry with more people booking on-line and travelling with low-cost airlines, while the tour operators still have an important role to play in market changes,” he said.

It is the growth of the independent travel industry which is hitting hotel trade most “but we've got to stick together and move with the times. “For example, we can't turn our backs on all-inclusive packages as it is a new and popular trend in the market,” he said. “We've got to make sure we find the right balance between providing a good service and meeting demand while also making sure we are not made to suffer by new planning laws,” he added.
