DRIVERS and traders have expressed their approval at the Calvia council's decision to introduce free parking in ORA (restricted parking) areas of its popular resorts.

The system is known as Zona Azul-Tarifa Cero (Blue Zone-Zero Charge), and it is in operation from Monday to Friday between 9.30am and 1.30pm and 4and 8pm, and on Saturdays from 9.30am to 1.30pm. It will be in force until October 31.

Drivers can park for a maximum of 90 minutes, after which they must move their car at least 200 metres.
In order to control the time the car has been parked, a cardboard clock must be displayed. These clocks are available free of charge at the Calvia town hall and tourist information offices. If a driver has no clock, the time should be clearly shown on a piece of paper.

Until Tuesday, police will merely warn drivers who do not obey the new regulations. Residents in the Blue Zone area must obtain a card which will allow them unlimited parking. There will be no time restrictions for parking on bicycles, mopeds, scooters or motorbikes, taxis when the driver is present, and vehicles for the disabled.
