Staff reporter MAJORCAN Hotel Federation boss, Pere Cañellas, said yesterday that the Balearics needs to triple the amount of money spent on promoting the region's tourist industry.

He said that, considering some 10 million tourists come here every year, much greater investment is needed in the region's infrastructure, services and communications “in order for us to remain a world leading destination and maintain our competitive edge.” The hotel federation chief warned that we can not afford to lose our quito of tourists, especially those from the main satellite markets, and he believes that the first step in ensuring that the British and German continue to come in large numbers, if to mount massive publicity campaigns “so that the million of visitors do not forget their close relationship with the islands.” But, while he wants to see stapes taken to protect the summer industry, Cañellas also stressed the need for the golf, hiking and nautical sectors to be given for support and government aid as part of a concerted effort to create an all-year tourist industry.

He said that the Balearics should look to how other regions of Spain have capitalised on their best assets.
