News desk THERE has been widespread protest at the central government's decision to allow Air Nostrum to raise its fares on inter-island flights by 2.78 percent, because of the increase in cost of petrol. The decision was taken without consulting or informing the Balearic government.

The company has increased the price of its return flights by four euros.
PIMEM, the small and medium-sized business organisation, said it was indignant, as the islands would lose competitivity and it was just another case of discrimination.

Government spokesman Joan Flaquer said it was abusive and infringed the autonomy of the islands.
The government will be asked to provide an explanation for the move.
The opposition claimed that the increase in prices introduced by Air Nostrum illustrated the failure of the policies of the Balearic ministry of public works and transport.
