BALEARIC MPs are facing a major crisis. No, they are not in the process of passing some piece of controversial legislation, it is that smoking has been banned in the local parliament. The smoke signals from parliament are not good with many MPs fearing that they will not be able to stand a long debate without a cigarette.
Under new Spanish legislation smoking is banned in public buildings from January 1 and in bars and restaurants two years later. Heavy smokers among Balearic MPs include Francesc Antich, the former Balearic leader.
Palma airport complaints
I thought the airport authorities were going to try and resolve the situation of the walking distances from the terminal to departure and arrival gates. I don't know why Palma is bothering to stage a marathon as travellers already have their very own one at Palma airport.
Surely, at this time of the year when there are a smaller number of flights operating into the airport the actual gates could be moved closer to the terminal. It's not rocket science. I am sure that many elderly travellers would certainly welcome the move. It is a complaint which has dogged the airport for years, it is a shame that it can't be resolved once and for all. The last time I went to Minorca I spent about twenty minutes walking to the departure gate to catch a twenty minute flight.
Bishop blues
T HE Mayor of Palma, Catalina Cirer, is under fire again for allegedly snubbing a Spanish bishop. It appears that a bishop from the mainland paid a courtesy call on the Mayor, who was allegedly unaware of the visit. He was kept waiting for 45 minutes and finally left. Cirer was furious and blamed her head of protocol. I must admit I am no fan of Catalina Cirer. I feel that she has done little for Palma. I wasn't very impressed with her waving a white handkerchief to show her disappointment with Real Mallorca's performance at Son Moix on Sunday.
She was not alone because as you can imagine local fans are not impressed. But for the Mayor of Palma to do so, I thought it was rather out of order. I hope she won't get upset when Palma residents do the same to her.
Real dreadful
I must admit I thought that Real Madrid with their star-studded team would be like watching the Harlem Globetrotters. I was very much mistaken. They play like the original Globetrotters would play now...like a bunch of old men who appear to be incapable of lasting 90 minutes.
