Staff reporter THE group of ten people who on Sunday were air lifted to safety by helicopter from the mountain refuge where they traditionally spend Christmas near Cuber reservoir, were yesterday enjoying the warmth of their own homes.

The Romero family and friends have spent Christmas at the mountain hideaway on the banks of the reservoir for the past few years. The group of ten, including young children and a baby, were having a wonderful time until they woke up on Sunday morning to find they were snowed in and unable to move their vehicles. What is more, there was no cover for their mobile telephones, so they could not contact the emergency services.

Unable to make it to the main Soller to Lluc road, they eventually managed to reach some local farnmers who alerted the Guardia Civil.
Surrounded by snow, freezing temperatures and poor visibility, a National Police helicopter managed to reach the reservoir within an hour and started to evacuate the trapped group. Making three flights, the ten people were lifted to the safety of the Es Verger restaurant below Alaro Castle.
