News Desk THE Balearic Environmental Group, GOB, have complained that the amount of new and old golf courses in Majorca are a real “threat” to rural areas and water resources on the island.

The group state that the thirteen golf courses that are being planned to be built in Majorca will demand even more water which is already scarce and will destroy essential countrysides.

At present there are 18 golf courses in Majorca and a further three in the process of being constructed.
The environmental group said that Majorca has “more than enough” golf courses “to meet demands in the Balearics”.
In addition they are criticising the Council of Majorca and the Balearic Government for supporting these type of infrastructure projects. Amongst the thirteen golf courses that are in the planning stages, some of them even “go against” the Majorca Land Plan, as they are being planned to be constructed in already “saturated” areas, such as the projects in Palma, Calvia and Son Servera. “To construct more is not necessary or convenient from the point of view of the impacts that the construction will entail, basically water demands, the change in the landscape and the increase of hotels”, the Environmental Group, GOB, added.
