News desk ANTONI Mas, chairman of the Majorcan restaurant owners association, said that the idea of tour operators selling packages consisting of bed and breakfast plus vouchers for meals in restaurants was “positive” providing it does not lead to a drop in quality.

He added that no proposals had been received from the German tour operator FTI, which is promoting the idea, although he expected that a meeting would be organised in the near future. He also said that it would have to be authorised by the Balearic tourist ministry. “We have put in a lot of effort to improve the quality of our restaurants, we have good cooks and we hope that the tour operators will offer good conditions to maintain standards,” he said yesterday.

Mas pointed out that tour operators used to contract restaurants a few years ago, for excursions, when the association asked that instead of providing tourists with packed lunches, they should contract a restaurant in the area.

At the same time, Mas said that a quality all inclusive package did not harm the complemenatry offer, because it accommodated clients who liked to eat outside the hotel.

However he admitted that the month of July has been “considerably worse” than last year for restaurant owners, not only because of the introduction of the all inclusive package but also because the average stay of visitors has dropped.
