THE Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder of two people whose bodies were found under a bridge over the Palma ring road on Sunday morning.

The victims were named as Angela Uguet Paramo, aged 36, of Felanitx, and Santiago Gonzalo Garcia, 49, of Madrid. Both were reported to be homeless.
No details have been revealed about the suspect who is in police custody while investigations continue. However, it is believed that he is also a homeless person.

It was a driver who spotted the body of the woman under the bridge and called the police, who discovered the body of the man nearby.
Both had been beaten about the head with a blunt instrument.
The murders are believed to have been committed in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The male victim was found lying on his back with his hand crossed over his chest. It is believed that he was surprised while sleeping and beaten to death about the head. The murder weapon has not been found.

The woman was lying face down. According to initial investigations, she either woke up as the man was attacked and was then beaten to death, or was in the area, and was attacked when she went to help the man.

AUTOPSIES
However, police are awaiting the results of the autopsies.
The most likely motive, according to police sources, is a settling of accounts, and it is not believed to be the work of a racist group.
The sources say that only one person was involved, although they have not ruled out the possibility that there may have been more than one attacker.
On Sunday morning, police searched the area under the bridge, where there was a considerable amount of rubbish, and the nearby carpark of a shopping centre, in search of the weapon, which has not been found.

Statements were also taken from people in the area, to see if they had witnessed anything suspicious.
Investigations have revealed that the couple regularly slept in a homeless shelter which is just a few metres from where they were found, but that night they had not slept there.

Several people who spent the night in the shelter and some of the monitors have been questioned.
On the other side of the ring road there is a plot of waste land with several shacks. Some of these have been set on fire deliberately, and the police are also looking into the possibility that the murder may be connected with these incidents.
