Staff Reporter THE Council of Majorca has organised a total of 108 events in 30 towns on the island which will take place from today until 18 September, in order to celebrate the Diada de Mallorca (Majorca Day).

The programme, which will cost around 350'000 euros, includes 36 musical acts, 20 traditional cultural events, 17 children's activities, 12 government acts, 10 sporting events and 13 of general cultural interest.

Majorca Day has been celebrated on the island since 1997, and is the commemoration of 12 September 1276, when King Jaime II of Majorca, son and heir of Jaime I who conquered the island in 1229, confirmed the privileges granted by his father. This marked the start of the Majorcan Royal House which continued until Jaime III was defeated in battle in Llucmajor on October 25, 1349.

This year the council will be giving away a Majorcan flag measuring 1.3 metres, a small pennant, a cap and a bracelet of Majorca to all those who attend the Open Doors days, today, tomorrow and Sunday, said the Director for Government Relations in the Council of Majorca, Josep Llieteres.

In terms of what is happening music wise, there will be a concert of Habaneras tomorrow at Playa del Molinar, concerts by Mallorca Canta which will take place every day in different towns, piano recitals, and concerts by many different groups, such as Cris Juanico, Capona, Mare Nostrum, Sterling and Tumbet de Solfa. The Majorca POP event will take place on Santa Ponsa beach at 9pm on 11 September, and will include performances by Coti, Efecto Mariposa, Blue Meany, Matari, Belen Arjona and Rienda Suelta.

For traditional culture, it will be well worth visiting Porreras on 10 September for the “La Revetlla de Sa Diada”, with giants, pipers and folk dancing. There will be more giants in Alcudia on 11 September. Children will be delighted with the Bicycle Trail and the Adventure Park which will be set up on 11 September in Sa Indiotera.

The governmental acts will include a concert by Ministrils, as well as Official Acts in La Misericordia cultural centre, like the concert by Joan Valent. Finally, there will be the Llatina Sailing Trophy held on 11 September in Cala Gamba.
