THE disgraced ex-Mayor of Andratx, Eugenio Hidalgo and his municipal planning inspector Jaume Gibert, were back on remand behind bars in Palma prison last night after being denied bail yesterday morning.

Hidalgo and Gibert, the only two people to have been arrested so far as a result of the Guardia Civil serious fraud squad's investigation into alleged building corruption and money laundering in Andratx, appeared before the judge presiding over the case, Álvaro Latorre, in court number 12 in Via Alemania yesterday. To their defence lawyers' surprise, they were denied bail and ordered back to Palma prison where they will remain on remand. The judge did however lift the two suspects' prison restrictions and they are now allowed to communicate with each other.

Since they were transferred to Palma prison on Thursday, the two suspects who were arrested last Monday, have been held in solitary.
Court sources have revealed that the judge has decided to hold the two men on remand to protect “the two key sources of evidence” in the investigation.
