THE Balearics, in particular Majorca, was peppered with bolts of lightning in the early hours of yesterday when an electric storm hit the region bringing a torrential storm in its wake and pulling temperatures down.

Yesterday afternoon there was a more Autumnal feel in the air with raincoats and umbrellas the order of the day.
The heaviest rain fell in the west of the island in Santa Ponsa and Palma although Minorca was also lashed by the heavy rains which dumped 66 litres per square metre in Santa Ponsa and 44 litres per square metre on the Balearic capital.

The region remains on weather alert today and tomorrow, but the main warning is for shipping because adverse sea conditions are forecast along with isolated outreaches of heavy rain. The next 48 hours will continue to be damp with widespread light to moderate showers and will feel rather cooler because of the moderate to strong north, north easterly winds.
