NEARLY half the population of the Balearic Islands has confessed in a survey to “never “reading anything or “almost never”, claiming that “not having time” is the chief culprit.

Research conducted by the regional Ministry for Education and Culture published yesterday and presented by Minister Barbara Galmes, said that 1'200 interviews were conducted throughout the Balearic Islands and confirmed that only 56.7 percent read to a greater or lesser extent. Of those consulted, 39.6 percent said they read regularly, and 17.1 “occasionally”. Of those who did read, 85.4 percent said they did it “for pleasure” - especially the reading of novels, and 60 percent cited the additional reason of wanting to be “better informed.”
