STAFF REPORTER UPGRADING the walkway between Cala Bona and Cala Millor on the east coast of Majorca is expected to be completed by the time the start of the tourist season comes round next year.

The Works and Services department of Son Servera Town Council has begun the upgrade on the Camí davant s'Hort, better known as “Telephone Alley” and will make sure that one of the most ill-used stretches of that particular coastal district is given a complete new look.

The 750'000 euros which has been allocated to the project is thanks to a grant funded by the regional government's Housing ministry. Local mayor Josep Barrientos, said yesterday that the facelift is indeed an important one because it will convert one of the most rundown parts of the district into one of the most attractive. He added that one of the advantages of the scheme being completed in time for the coming tourist season is that the boulevard will be seen as an extremely tasteful feature by visitors, thereby playing a part in the promotion of the area. Until now, the Camí davant s'Hort had been an abandoned walkway without pavements or lighting. When the works are complete, it will have a double-pavemented area of 14 metres in length and will lead into the bicycle lane as far as Cala Bona. The boulevard will be fitted with public seating for rest areas as well as lighting.
