BALEARIC Consumer Association spokesman Claudia de Haro said yesterday that for the benefit of both shops and their customers, prices need to be kept down this Christmas rather than spiralling upwards as they normally do at this time of year.

She said that if families struggling to make ends meet as a result of the economic crisis have to cope with soaring prices in basic foodstuffs it will leave them with little else to spend. Urging responsibility by all parties, De Haro said that consumers also need to exercise restraint and not buy something very expensive simply “because it is Christmas.” She gave a reminder than when January comes round, bills will still need to be paid.
