PALMA
THE Guardia Civil traffic police launched their second anti-drink driving campaign on Friday.
The first, which was carried out during the first two weeks of this month, was more of an awareness campaign to alert drivers to the dangers of drinking and driving, what the permitted alcohol limits are and what penalties they will face if caught,.

This second campaign, the first of three special festive crackdowns over the next month, is specifically focused on catching and punishing drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or both.

This year the traffic police are going to be showing little or no leniency to drivers caught breaking the law and the more serious offenders can expect to lose their license on the spot and watch their vehicle be towed away.

Heavy spot fines will also be handed out and points docked from licenses.
Hundreds of check points are going to be thrown up across the Balearics and the traffic polices' eye-in-the-sky helicopter will also be monitoring the behaviour of drivers.
