FIVE people have been detained en route to Ibiza from Argentina carrying 2'300 grammes of cocaine hidden in training shoes belonging to the smugglers.
The five, including a married couple, were apprehended at Valencia's Manises airport following a flight from Buenos Aires. Their operation - supplying narcotics in a steady stream of trade between South America and Europe - had been under investigation since July. Valencia was their main arrival airport from Argentina.

The drug haul was divided between the couple and their associates, including two brothers, one of whom had a home in Ibiza. It was hidden in the plastic insoles of the shoes and was not detectable by sight or by the security scanners at the airports.

When interviewed by police, one of the gang claimed he did not know he was carrying the drugs. Officers searching his Ibiza apartment discovered more cocaine, ammunition and a revolver cleaning kit. Police also found 400 grammes of cocaine hidden in a strong box during another search.

The seizure was a joint operation between the organised crime squad of Ibiza (GRECO) and drugs squad agents in Valencia.
