PALMA
APPROVAL in principle was given yesterday by the Balearic government for the wheels to be set in motion for the establishment of a regional police force in the Islands. Government spokesman, Joana Barcelo, said however she doubted that the new security force would be up and running within the term of office of the present Socialist coalition under president Francesc Antich.

Barcelo explained that the already-existing Institute for Public Security will be charged with laying the foundations of the regional police force of the future. The Institute currently has the task of co-ordinating activities and projects undertaken by the local police in the Balearics.
