MAGALLUF
AN American tourist was critically ill in hospital on Majorca yesterday after a six-metre fall from an apartment in Magalluf left him with severe head injuries.

The 37-year-old victim, Thomas, from Ohio, was spending a few days holiday with his wife and some friends and had been out to dinner, returning in the early hours of the morning after stopping at night spots on the way home. According to statements made by his wife and friends he had lost his balance on the balcony of a second floor flat and fallen over its low wall.

Tall and weighing 125 kilos, Thomas fell headlong and hit the ground with enormous impact.
Emergency services were called to the scene at the Playa apartments in Avenida Cas Saboners around 4am and found the victim unconscious and in a pool of blood.

Paramedics worked for 40 minutes to stabilise his condition, needing to place his head and neck in a special collar.
Local Police and Guardia Civil also attended the scene and opened an investigation to ascertain precisely what had happened prior to the victim's fall. The decision was meanwhile taken to move Thomas to Son Dureta hospital in Palma without delay.

The ambulance was accompanied by a taxi carrying Thomas' wife and friends, all in a state of shock.
