PALMA
NEXT week, nine new beach rescue jet skis are going to be distributed to some of the Balearics' most popular tourist resorts.
The Interior Ministry said yesterday that the jet skis are specially equipped for life saving duties and all nine come with stretchers and other life saving material.

Interior Ministry sources explained that one of the results of last year's beach report was that a large number of people were saved from drowning by the rapid response and medical attention from beach guards using jet skis.

Andratx, Calvia, Capdepera, Pollensa and Sant Llorenc councils are going to each receive a new jet ski with the other five being deployed to Minorca and Ibiza.

This year there are a record number of life guards, the vast majority working for the Red Cross, on duty on Balearic beaches and the number of control towers has also been increased along with floating barriers to protect swimmers from boats.
